Palmela<\/h3>\n

Castle<\/h4>\n

Built strategically on the mountainous slopes of the Arr\u00e1bida, the castle was erected on the Islamic wall and alcazaba that preceded it between the 8th and 12th centuries.<\/p>\n

It was conquered from the Moors by King Afonso I of Portugal in 1147 and it went through several periods of military occupation.<\/p>\n

When the seat of the Order of Santiago settled here, it was necessary to build other structures, namely the convent and the S\u00e3o Tiago church, among others.<\/p>\n

Hermenegildo Capelo, son of major F\u00e9lix Ant\u00f3nio Gomes Capelo (governor of the castle) was born on February 4th, 1841 at the former Residence of the Governor, also said to be one of the dignitaries of the Military Order.<\/p>\n

Hermenegildo settled himself in the navy and was able to reach the rank of Vice Admiral.<\/p>\n

He became well known for his expeditions to Angola and Mozambique and to the unknown regions between the two colonies.<\/p>\n

Hermenegildo and Roberto Ivens studied the connections between the Congo and Zamzebi rivers in 1877; they returned to Lisbon in March 1880.<\/p>\n

Between the years of 1884 and 1885, a new expedition took them from the Angolan coast to Quelimane, Mozambique, always travelling from the inland.<\/p>\n

They returned to the kingdom and were welcomed by King Lu\u00eds I of Portugal.<\/p>\n

From these two expeditions came two books: “De Benguela \u00e0s Terras de Iaca” and ” De Angola \u00e0 Contra-Costa” .<\/p>\n

Following October 5th, 1910, Capelo resigned from all his posts and died in Lisbon at the age of 76.<\/p>\n

The space of the old convent is currently serving as a luxurious inn called Pousada Hist\u00f3rica de Palmela.<\/p>\n

The castle has been a National Monument since 1910.<\/p>\n

Santa Maria Church<\/h4>\n

Within the walls we can still contemplate the Santa Maria Church ruins.
<\/span><\/p>\n

Established at the end of the 12th century and became the first headquarter of the village in the beginning of the 13th century.
<\/span><\/p>\n

With the development of the settlement outside the walls, and the growing importance of the Parish of S\u00e3o Pedro, it started to lose relevancy.
<\/span><\/p>\n

Ruined in 1755, continued its degradation process until our current days.
The former sacristy was restored by architect S\u00e9rgio Infante and in 2001 it housed the meeting room and library of the GEsOS (Gabinete de Estudos sobre a Ordem de Santiago)<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

S\u00e3o Tiago Church<\/h4>\n

Within the castle walls we will find one of the most important works of Gothic Style called stripped, the old convent church dedicated to S\u00e3o Tiago (Saint James).
<\/span><\/p>\n

Its establishment remotes back to mid-15th century.
<\/span><\/p>\n

During Jorge de Lencastre, Duke of Coimbra\u2019s master (last master of the Order) the Church went through several construction works, namely its expansion and some other type of improvements.
<\/span><\/p>\n

After the 1755 earthquake the church went into decline, continuing to deteriorate until 1834 with the disappearance of the Religious Orders.
<\/span><\/p>\n

During the 1940s, it became the target of new interventions.
<\/span><\/p>\n

The space is being currently used for several types of cultural activities.<\/span><\/p>\n

S\u00e3o Pedro Church<\/h4>\n

Established in the 14th century, it is one of the most remarkable buildings of religious architecture in the county.
<\/span><\/p>\n

What remains today is the result of the mid-16th century reconstruction and the decorations made after the 1713 fire.
<\/span><\/p>\n

During the remaining years of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries it underwent several construction campaigns. The 18th century intervention was the result of the 1755 earthquake and the 19th century one is related to another earthquake that occurred in 1858.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Miseric\u00f3rdia Church<\/h4>\n

This church must have had its origin in the chapel of the former Esp\u00edrito Santo medieval lodge, connected to a brotherhood of the S\u00e3o Pedro (Saint Peter) parish.<\/p>\n

The church was partially completed around 1530 and only fully completed in 1566.<\/p>\n

It underwent numerous interventions in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o Cine-Theatre<\/h4>\n

It is an emblematic image of the urban space of the village with great emphasis on the tower. The building was commissioned by benefactor and Palmela born Humberto da Silva Cardoso.
<\/span><\/p>\n

It was built between 1948 and 1950 by German architect Willy Braun and engineer Pedro Cavallieri Rodrigues Martinho, having been inaugurated in 1952.
<\/span><\/p>\n

It closed to the public in 1981, but after the City Hall acquired the building in 1989 it was revived, reopening in 1991.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Quinta do Anjo Artificial Caves<\/h4>\n

The set of caves was discovered at the end of the 19th century.
<\/span><\/p>\n

It is a prehistoric funerary monument, used between the end of the Neolithic and beginning of the Bonze period.
<\/span><\/p>\n

A relevant funerary estate of those periods was found.
<\/span><\/p>\n

The Caves were named a National Monument in 1934.<\/span><\/p>\n

Azeit\u00e3o<\/h3>\n

Igreja de S. Louren\u00e7o (Vila Nogueira de Azeit\u00e3o)<\/h4>\n

Igreja paroquial dedicada a S. Louren\u00e7o.
<\/span><\/p>\n

De funda\u00e7\u00e3o medieval g\u00f3tica, sofreu diversas campanhas de obras, nomeadamente nos s\u00e9culos XVII e XVIII.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Igreja de S. Sim\u00e3o (Vila Fresca de Azeit\u00e3o)<\/h4>\n

Igreja paroquial \u00e9 dedicada ao ap\u00f3stolo S. Sim\u00e3o.
<\/span><\/p>\n

De funda\u00e7\u00e3o anterior ao s\u00e9culo XVI, apresenta um portal de gosto renascentista e azulejos do s\u00e9culo XVII.
<\/span><\/p>\n

Com o terramoto de 1755 o edif\u00edcio sofreu alguns danos nomeadamente nas quatro torres originais: duas ca\u00edram e as outras duas ficaram arruinadas.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Quinta da Bacalhoa (Vila Fresca de Azeit\u00e3o)<\/h4>\n

Fundado no s\u00e9culo XV, o conjunto formado por pal\u00e1cio e quinta pertenceu ao infante D. Jo\u00e3o mestre da Ordem de Santiago, filho de D. Jo\u00e3o I.
<\/span><\/p>\n

Esta propriedade foi herdada pela filha D. Beatriz, m\u00e3e de D. Manuel I.
<\/span><\/p>\n

Tamb\u00e9m conhecida pelo Pal\u00e1cio dos Albuquerques por ter sido vendida em 1528 a Br\u00e1s de Albuquerque, filho mais velho de Afonso de Albuquerque, foi a mais famosa quinta de recreio do s\u00e9culo XVI.
<\/span><\/p>\n

Datam desta \u00e9poca o gosto renascentista patente na concep\u00e7\u00e3o do conjunto pal\u00e1cio-jardim bem como nos c\u00e9lebres azulejos e na casa do fresco.
<\/span><\/p>\n

Na d\u00e9cada de 30 do s\u00e9culo XX, o conjunto foi adquirido e restaurado por Orlena Scoville de nacionalidade americana.
<\/span><\/p>\n

Em 1997, Thomas Scoville neto de Orlena p\u00f4s a propriedade \u00e0 venda.
<\/span><\/p>\n

No ano 2000 o conjunto foi comprado por Joe Berardo. Este mandou fazer v\u00e1rias obras pol\u00e9micas, principalmente no jardim.
<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c9 monumento nacional desde 1996.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sesimbra<\/h3>\n

Castelo<\/h4>\n

Em 1191 durante a investida de Al Mansur o castelo de Sesimbra ficou arrasado.
<\/span><\/p>\n

A reconquista definitiva de Sesimbra deve ter ocorrido antes de 1194. D. Sancho I entregou a povoa\u00e7\u00e3o a colonos francos em 1199 e deu carta de foral em 1201.
<\/span><\/p>\n

A constru\u00e7\u00e3o do castelo arrastou-se ao longo do s\u00e9culo XIII e foi conclu\u00edda no reinado de D. Dinis.
<\/span><\/p>\n

Depois de perder a sua import\u00e2ncia estrat\u00e9gica e militar serviu de posto de vigil\u00e2ncia da costa.
<\/span><\/p>\n

O castelo ficou despovoado e manteve a igreja paroquial de Nossa Senhora da Consola\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fortaleza de Santiago<\/h4>\n

Constru\u00edda na praia, esta fortaleza fazia parte do sistema de defesa costeira da \u00e1rea de Sesimbra.
<\/span><\/p>\n

Uma das plantas mais antigas da fortaleza data de 1693.
<\/span><\/p>\n

A fortaleza foi espa\u00e7o de veraneio de membros da corte.
<\/span><\/p>\n

Ao longo dos anos o edif\u00edcio sofreu altera\u00e7\u00f5es que modificaram o seu aspecto inicial.
<\/span><\/p>\n

Durante v\u00e1rios anos dos s\u00e9culos XX e XXI a antiga fortaleza serviu de quartel da Guarda Nacional Republicana.
<\/span><\/p>\n

Em 2006 iniciou-se o processo de municipaliza\u00e7\u00e3o do espa\u00e7o que foi conclu\u00eddo em 2014.
<\/span><\/p>\n

Sesimbra ganhou um lugar p\u00fablico mantendo viva a sua hist\u00f3ria e o seu patrim\u00f3nio.

Capela do Esp\u00edrito Santo dos Mareantes<\/h4>\n

Fundada em finais do s\u00e9culo XV pela Confraria do Esp\u00edrito Santo dos Mareantes de Sesimbra tinha objectivos assistenciais e de culto.
<\/span><\/p>\n

A capela localizava-se no piso superior e o hospital medieval no piso inferior.
<\/span><\/p>\n

A capela sofreu grandes estragos com o terramoto de 1755 ao contr\u00e1rio do hospital que ficou entulhado e esquecido mas preservado durante cerca de 200 anos.
<\/span><\/p>\n

Ap\u00f3s v\u00e1rias interven\u00e7\u00f5es no espa\u00e7o do monumento foi poss\u00edvel adapt\u00e1-lo a n\u00facleo do Museu Municipal de Sesimbra.
<\/span><\/p>\n

Colec\u00e7\u00e3o de Arte Sacra, nomeadamente a pintura de Greg\u00f3rio Lopes \u201cNossa Senhora da Miseric\u00f3rdia\u201d.
<\/span><\/p>\n

Exposi\u00e7\u00e3o dos achados arqueol\u00f3gicos no antigo hospital bem como os grafitos murais de embarca\u00e7\u00f5es.
<\/span><\/p>\n

Igreja de S\u00e3o Tiago<\/h4>\n

Dedicada ao ap\u00f3stolo S\u00e3o Tiago.
<\/span><\/p>\n

A nova igreja paroquial foi fundada em 1534 e concluiu-se em 1536.
<\/span><\/p>\n

Foi institu\u00edda como priorado da Ordem de Santiago.
<\/span><\/p>\n

O edif\u00edcio teve v\u00e1rias campanhas de obras nos s\u00e9culos XVII e XVIII. Sofreu v\u00e1rios estragos com o terramoto de 1755.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Santu\u00e1rio de Nossa Senhora do Cabo Espichel<\/h4>\n

O in\u00edcio do culto a Santa Maria da Pedra da Mua \/ Nossa Senhora do Cabo ter\u00e1 tido origem no s\u00e9culo XIV.<\/p>\n

Em 1432 organizou-se a Confraria de Nossa Senhora do Cabo devido \u00e0 elevada aflu\u00eancia de peregrinos ao local da primitiva ermida da mesma invoca\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/p>\n

A igreja actual come\u00e7ou a construir-se em 1701 e as hospedarias em 1715.<\/p>\n

Nesta altura come\u00e7ou a delinear-se o recinto do santu\u00e1rio com a organiza\u00e7\u00e3o do espa\u00e7o pr\u00f3prio para acolher os peregrinos.<\/p>\n

Assim constru\u00edram-se: hospedarias, cozinhas, padaria, cocheiras, casa da \u00c1gua, aqueduto, M\u00e3e d\u2019\u00c1gua \/ Po\u00e7o velho da Az\u00f3ia, po\u00e7os, casa da lenha, casa da \u00d3pera \/ Teatro, tr\u00eas Cruzeiros de Peregrina\u00e7\u00e3o e Cruzeiro de Chegada.<\/p>\n

Todas as constru\u00e7\u00f5es enquadram um extenso terreiro \/ arraial.<\/p>\n

Actualmente ainda se realizam as festividades dos c\u00edrios de Az\u00f3ia, Palmela e Sesimbra.<\/p>\n
